Review Shows Impact of Genetic Engineering and Gene Editing to Africa's Food Security
August 28, 2024 |
Researchers from the Federal University of Technology Akure and partners reviewed how genetic engineering and gene editing can help contribute to food security in Africa.
Various African countries cannot meet the food demands of their population, and this is worsened by disease outbreaks and climate change. Biotechnology tools, such as genetic engineering and gene editing, will be helpful in boosting crop production to feed the African population.
Researchers analyzed the impact of genetic engineering and gene editing in Africa, with a specific focus on Nigeria. The study discussed how genetic engineering and gene editing were used to improve various crops, such as rice, maize, sorghum, and millet. The team highlighted that biotech tools will help address major problems related to agriculture and crop production. The researchers also mentioned the importance of implementing policies and regulations related to GM and GE crops.
