
OsWOX13 Controls Rice Flowering and Drought Escape

Myongji University scientist Yeon-Ki Kim reported the successful knockout of a rice gene that leads to delayed flowering under natural long-day conditions. The findings of the study, published in Bioscience, Biotechnology & Biochemistry, could help breeders develop rice cultivars with improved yield and resilience to drought.
Plants have complex mechanisms to adjust their flowering time, depending on the environmental conditions and other internal signals. To elucidate more on these flowering mechanisms, the impact of overexpressing or knocking out OsWOX13 using CRISPR gene editing system was explored.
Results showed that overexpression of OsWOX13 accelerated flowering by 10 days, while knockout lines flowered 4-6 days later than wild-type plants. Further analyses revealed that OsWOX13 may be involved in drought escape responses through the OsbZIP23 signaling pathway. OsWOX13 appears to influence flowering time by regulating the expression of photoperiod signaling genes.
Revealing the function of OsWOX13 provides valuable insights into how plants adapt their flowering time under stress conditions.
