Kenya's Biosafety Authority Prepares to Release More GM Crops

October 2, 2024

Kenya's National Biosafety Authority (NBA) is set to release three additional genetically modified crops, particularly maize, cassava, and potato once a pending court case is resolved. This is according to NBA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Roy Mugiira, who also stressed that the GM crop varieties will contribute to food security and reduction of imported products while boosting exports.

Dr. Mugiira discussed the matter during NBA's 12th Annual General Meeting held in Naivasha. He also mentioned that 42 GM crops are currently in the pipeline. “We are done with research on maize, cassava, and potatoes which are disease and weather tolerant and we shall release them into the market once the court case is done,” he said.

Kenya has approved the planting of Bt cotton in 2020 after lifting a 10-year moratorium on GM crops importation.
