Socio Economic Benefits of Transgenic Crops

Impact assessment studies involve estimating the economic, social, and environmental impacts of crop biotechnology.  Impact studies usually employ scientific methods drawn from economics and the social sciences providing metrics of welfare effects of crop biotechnology adoption to include economic surplus, farm-level productivity and income, indices of health and nutrition, and indices of environmental footprints.

ISAAA's mission is to contribute to poverty alleviation through sustainable increases in crop productivity in the developing world.  We are achieving this mission by facilitating the transfer of crop biotechnology applications to developing countries and by strengthening the capacity to evaluate, regulate, and deploy these new technologies.  Thus, in the context of ISAAA, the principal purpose of impact assessment studies is to quantify the magnitude and distribution of benefits and costs of the adoption of crop biotechnology applications relative to existing technologies.  Independent assessment studies (ex-ante and ex-post) about the social, economic, environmental, and health impacts of crop biotechnology are carried out on ISAAA's ongoing technology transfer and support projects in Southeast Asia and Africa. Results of these studies are shared in print and electronic publications through the Global Knowledge Center on Crop Biotechnology.
