Indian Researchers Analyze Trends and Evolution of Research on Genetic Modification
July 17, 2024 |
Developments in modern biotechnology pave the way for more precise and efficient methods of genetic engineering. With the emergence of tools such as CRISPR, it is vital to understand the progression of these applications to highlight areas where further research is needed. The study, published in the Journal of Scientific Research and Reports, provides a comprehensive review of the global research landscape in genetic modification.
Researchers from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) conducted a worldwide bibliometric analysis of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), analyzing 1,172 studies published in English from 2000 to 2020. The study included topics such as genetically modified (GM) crops, GM food, GMOs, Bt cotton, Bt corn, and Bt brinjal.
The results of the study showed that the majority of the GM articles are focused on entomology (15.52%), while biotechnology and applied microbiology constitute 8.36% of the articles. The researchers observed a rising number of citations from 2013 to 2020, indicating an increasing interest in the topic of GM technologies during these years. The results also showed that the most researched topic is focused on the application of Bacillus thuringiensis in crops, with the term “Bt cotton” as the most frequently used keyword.
The findings of the study also highlighted the crucial role of international collaborations in shaping scientific advancements and research on genetic modifications. While the study recognizes the rising trend in GM research, the researchers recommend further study and monitoring of the long-term effects of GM technologies on ecosystems and human health.
